Top 6 Tricks to Fix an InDesign File

Are you suffering from weird behavior of your Adobe InDesign files? If yes then don’t worry as you can easily fix them without need of any extra skill or knowledge. You need to simply apply the below given fixes carefully.

Save as

First and very common fix for a corrupt or damaged indesign file is Save As option, try to use ‘Save as’ to save that document. This forces InDesign to clean up its file structure. Sometime this trick will work and make your Indesign file error free.

Export as an INX or IDML file and reopen that file

Along with the INDD file format, InDesign can also save files using two extra formats: First is the INX file format and the IDML format. Try to export a file to INX or IDML and then reopening it again in InDesign is a well known troubleshooting trick.

Move all content to a new document

Try to move all content to a new document, avoid COPY and PASTE individual frames to a fresh new document. InDesign allows user to move the complete pages from one document to another, which can be a very effective way of cleaning up a file.

Reset the preferences

To reset all the InDesign preferences you need to start the application while holding down the SHIFT, CTRL, OPTION & COMMAND keys (Mac) or SHIFT, CTRL & ALT keys (PC). Through this you will reset all the application preferences and you’ll lose any custom document presets, print presets, transparency flattener presets and custom stroke styles. In case you don’t have back-up of these, first make sure that InDesign’s preference and presets are reconfigured and then to make a back-up of them.

InDesign keeps crashing

If the InDesign crashes each time it is opened then this is most likely caused by a recovery file that gets loaded automatically and that causes the application to crash. Find the folder named ‘InDesign Recovery’ where such files are kept and delete all the files in it.

Revert to the previous edition

Professionals trick: They will always from time to time save their work with a slightly different file name and if a document gets damaged, they can always revert to the earlier edition.
